Green Consumerism

Green consumerism is doing just that, consuming us.

We pledge to go green but by all means we’re all generally guilty of still over consuming. We’re finding ways to reduce and recycle but still purchasing items at the rapid rate of general consumerism.

This is missing the point entirely.

Over consuming leads to abuse of the land and mother earth’s resources, as-well as obvious social and economic problems. This guides to more pollutant emissions, increased land-use, deforestation and accelerated climate change. In 2016, Australia purchased more than 20.4 billion dollars in fashion alone. Our focus should be on minimising this number, recycling and reducing our need for commercialism. There’s no point of going green if you’re going to purchase just as many products.

With million dollar companies switching to more sustainable alternatives, it’s no wonder that eco substitutes are becoming a household priority and shaping consumer behaviour and perception. Consumers are becoming more obligated to making better purchases, despite being slightly higher in costs. It’s this green behaviour that consumers are adopting that are becoming the catalyst for sustainability and a movement on how we consume.

Author, Robert Swan said “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” It’s this forefront thinking that has sparked so much passion to those aware of our merchandising implications and how our decisions impact the longevity of our resources. Whilst a lot of purchasers are inclined to purchase more green products, even less actually do. It’s this transition were currently in, between what’s easily available (and what we have always purchased) and what’s better for the environment.

Despite the negatives to capitalism, green consumerism is leading a shift in peoples thinking. It’s this sense of connection to the sustainability of our world’s resources that has ignited a change in consumerism behaviour. To be more aware and shift peoples perspectives on the way we produce & purchase. There is no product that entirely has a zero impact, but a step in the right direction is at least the beginning of transformation of adjustment.

We encourage you to only purchase what you need and only with sustainable products.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.
