Period underwear (gahhhhh even the name gives me the hibbies)
I know this is an unspoken topic, so much so that I decided to write this blog, better to be honest than not right! It’s something we have to deal with, one of the benefits (sarcastic) of being a woman. I’ve reduced my waste for years but getting rid of my trusty tampons and pads wasn’t something I was entirely willing to give up, the name period undies just sounds…well different.
So after discovering that around 20 billion tampons and pads end up in landfill every year and each woman roughly menstruates for 40 years of her life I decided I didn’t want to add to that statistic anymore. I was willing to give it a red hot go to break the cycle. Not only was it an environmental choice but it was additionally a health one. Common chemicals that show up in pads and tampons are Dioxins & furans, which are linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, and reproductive toxicity, all of which are byproducts of the bleaching process.
I purchased my period undies (also great for after birth and incontinence) from My Humble Earth, I was weary & hesitant. No one had ever told me about their experience with period undies and I was scared to leak everywhere. From what I researched online though I went a size up from my usual size as I’m very bloated around that time and i’m all for comfort. My Humble Earth has two different styles, I chose the hip huggers to keep me supported around the lower belly region. Whilst I’m about to get real personal with you all, I think its important to keep everyone well informed about my experience so I will keep this as honest as possible so you can make your own mind up if period undies are a good fit for you.
The journey begins.
So after purchasing my underwear I waited for her to make her appearance. The first day I wore the period undies I was surprised that they didn’t cut in, they hugged in the right places and I could wear anything without feeling like the whole world knew that aunt flo had just came to the party. They looked and felt just like regular underwear except better. My Humble Earth are certified organic so to be entirely honest, they felt better than my normal underwear. Whilst they felt great I was still anxious about wearing them and on the first day I went back to the bathroom every hour to see if I was leaking, I was low key petrified of the undies actual capabilities. Day one was a success.
Day two. Most ladies will hear day two and get PTSD. Let me make this very clear I suffer from endometriosis my periods on my second day are so terrible that sometimes I can barely get out of bed, severe pain, vomiting and not to mention I don’t think I've gone one night my entire life without leaking or setting an alarm to get up in the middle of the night to change. So to say that I have put these undies to the test is an understatement. My second night I put them on, said a little period prayer and went to bed. I woke up, at 5am, without changing the sheets, my clothes, setting an alarm or having to shower in the middle of the night. There was absolutely no leakage at all!!!!! These period undies hold up to four tampons worth and a four layer technology that absorbs the moisture and hugs in all the right places for minimal leakage. I genuinely was shocked.
So the period underwear is great for comfort, efficiency, breathability but now for the part I was dreading the absolute most, washing them. I was scared on how to wash them, if they would effect my other clothes, a whole range of things was racing through my mind. What I do (probably a bit gross for some, but hey it honest) is i throw mine in the shower and let my soap from my shower rinse them off. I put them in my wash bag and throw them into the wash and dry as I would any other item of clothing. They came out absolutely fine!
The remaining days were without incident, uncomfortableness or embarrassment.
My opinion.
My Humble Earth period undies are amazing, not only is the designer and owner a woman but she also is helping the environment and donating a portion of proceeds to Zonta, a refugee camp for women in Perth. You can purchase your undies through my shop, an official reseller of My Humble Earth products.
Do I love the period undies, 100%, have I used anything else since switching? Absolutely not. I will never go back to anything else but period undies. I recently gifted my best friend with some, she was the same as I was, one day of using them and she has never gone back to anything else either. I honestly swear by them they have made that time of the month less daunting for me. They are my new go to I cannot recommend them higher. They are better for the environment, waterways, contributing less to landfill, safer for our bodies and more reliable just by one simple adjustment. Whats not to love!
Period undies are a 10 out of 10 for me.
